TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It is a non-invasive therapy that uses a small device and electrode pads placed on the skin to deliver gentle electrical pulses.
The goal of TENS is to help reduce how pain signals are felt by the body. Some patients describe the sensation as tingling, pulsing, or buzzing over the treatment area.
At DeNova Health, TENS may be considered as part of a broader care plan for certain pain concerns, especially when symptoms are affecting movement, comfort, or daily activity.
How TENS Works
TENS uses low-voltage electrical current delivered through pads placed on the skin near the painful area or along a related nerve pathway.
The electrical pulses may help interrupt pain messages travelling through the nerves. TENS may also encourage the body to release natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins.
TENS does not treat the root cause of every pain condition. It is usually used as a pain management tool while other parts of the care plan address movement, strength, support, pressure, or tissue irritation.
Where TENS May Fit
TENS may be discussed when pain is making it harder to move comfortably or participate in treatment.
It may be considered for:
- Muscle or joint pain: May help reduce discomfort that limits movement or daily activity.
- Nerve-related discomfort: May be discussed when pain feels burning, tingling, or sensitive.
- Soft tissue irritation: May help manage pain while irritated muscles, tendons, or ligaments recover.
- Rehabilitation support: May be used alongside physical therapy, exercise training, bracing, orthotics, or other care.
- Short-term symptom relief: May help reduce pain enough to support movement, rest, or daily function.
How DeNova Health Decides If It Fits
Before recommending TENS, DeNova Health will look at where your pain is located, how it feels, what makes it worse, and what other treatments have been tried.
Your provider may also review your medical history, skin sensitivity, implanted devices, nerve symptoms, movement patterns, and treatment goals. This helps determine whether TENS is appropriate or whether another therapy may be a better fit.
When to Book an Appointment
If pain is affecting your comfort, movement, or ability to take part in daily activity, DeNova Health can assess whether TENS may fit your care plan.
Book an appointment to review your symptoms, discuss your treatment options, and determine whether TENS is an appropriate next step.
