Three Common Causes of Extremely Dry & Peeling Feet
🍄 1. Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)
Even if your face or hands tend to be dry, do not dismiss this skin condition on your feet. You don’t have to be a jock to contract athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that usually starts as dry, itchy skin that then progresses to inflammation and blisters. When blisters break, the infection spreads.
💡 Note: Athlete’s foot usually shows up between the toes first. It can spread to the soles and even to other parts of the body (like the underarms or groin), usually due to scratching.
🧬 2. Dermatitis & Auto-Immune Disorders
Dermatitis and other immune system disorders, such as eczema or psoriasis, can cause excessive skin peeling on feet. These auto-immune diseases cause the skin cells to die and shed too quickly, causing excessive scaling, flaking, or peeling of the skin. Dermatitis-induced skin peeling may occur in between the toes, the bottom of the feet, both sides of the feet, or on the skin of the hands.
🧴 3. Allergies & Contact Dermatitis
There are various kinds of allergies which trigger skin peeling that can be visible on your hands or feet. Allergies to medications, fragrances, or harsh detergents are the most common ones. Peeling foot skin caused by allergies is usually noted by severe itching which only stops when you keep away from things that initially caused the allergic reaction.
Never dismiss pain in your feet. Pay attention to how they look and, especially, how they feel.
