The Flaws of the Flip Flop
Colorful flip flops on the beach

“Summer is here and the flip flops are flopping!”

These easy to slip on sandals are not so easy on your feet. They may be cute and convenient, but after a few months of wearing flip flops, you may end up dealing with some rather painful foot injuries.

⚠️ Sole & Alignment Flaws

The very thin and flat spongy sole of the flip flop offers no support for your feet. When you wear a regular or supportive shoe, your foot is secured in place. Flip flops do not provide this support, causing your foot to excessively roll inward (over-pronation).

Achilles Tendinitis: Pain and swelling along the tendon attaching to the heel.

Shin Splints: Pain along the anterior tibia bone and calf muscles.

⚠️ Toe-Gripping Strain

When walking in flip flops, your toes must constantly curl and grip the sole to keep the sandal on your feet. This puts a tremendous amount of stress on the bottom of your foot, overstretching the thick tissue band.

Plantar Fasciitis: Tiny tears and inflammation near the heel insertion.

Chronic Heel Pain: Painful steps, especially first thing in the morning.

Summer Shoe Advisory

Flip flops are great for around the pool, the beach or gym changing rooms, but they are not recommended for walking around all day. It’s great to wear sandals in the summer, but try to find options that support your body mechanics:

What to look for in a summer sandal:

  • Thick, shock-absorbing soles
  • Built-in structural arch support
  • Adjustable straps to keep foot secure
  • Moulded foot beds and deep heel cups

Consult with your foot specialist if you suspect that you may be suffering from any summer foot ailments. We can help you with treatments, footwear advice, and customized orthotics. Have a wonderful summer!
